Performance for Tesla is a critical thing, especially for electronic vehicles. Today Tesla put out an update on the Tesla Model S and the range of 265 miles to 402 miles! They revisited the design over and over again to increase the range. So, how did they do this?
First, they significantly lowered the mass of the vehicle. Mass is the enemy of performance plus efficiency. They worked on lowering the weight of the batteries, interior components, and seats. Focusing on weight reduction really helps increase the range of Model Y. All these reductions didn’t hurt the premium feel and performance.
Second, they took a good look at the aero wheels and tires. The new “tempest” wheel reduces aerodynamic drag, which goes a long way to increasing the distance. The new design gains another 2% to the distance of the Model Y. It might not sound like much, but every little bit adds up.
Third, they increased the drive unit efficiency. They replaced the mechanical oil pump with an electric one that optimizes the reduction of friction. They also made further improvements to the gearbox of both the Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y. These combinations of improvements got them another 2% in range increase.
Forth, they worked on the regenerative braking unit. They made it work at lower speeds, thus sending more power back into the battery pack. This also resulted in a smoother de-acceleration, which makes for a smoother driving experience.
Fifth, they also worked on the superchargers design, which they call V3 supercharging. These new charging stations enable you to charge your Tesla at a 50% decrease in charging time!
Now, as a plus, they have lowered the Tesla Model S price by $5,000! This even makes it more affordable for those who like this Model. With the gains in efficiency and price reduction, customers receive more value when purchasing the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus.
